Help Save Michelle

17 05 2008

From Carl:

Please forward to anyone you know of Asian descent, blast out to your email lists - they are particularly looking for folks of vietnamese and chinese descent…but any and all asians might be a match. it’s real important - thanks for reading…

“we have a good friend from CA, Michelle Maykin, who was diagnosed in February 2007 with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. after undergoing chemo and several months of being cancer-free, the cancer relapsed on May 7 and she needs a bone marrow transplant by June 21, 2008 to save her life. she just turned 26 years old and there’s lots of info about her at http://www.projectmichelle.com/.

michelle is chinese-vietnamese and so her chances of finding a match will most likely be someone of any or both of these ethnic backgrounds. there are about 7 million americans in the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry but only 7% are of any asian ethnicity and only .01% are of vietnamese ethnicity, so the numbers are not good. because time is running out, we’ll be organizing bone marrow registry drives within the next few weeks.

to register, all you have to do is have your cheek swabbed with a q-tip. it is 0% invasive and if there’s a match, 70% of all bone marrow transplants can be done via blood transfusion, which is basically not very different than getting blood drawn.”

I’ve attached a list below of upcoming drives in the NYC area. So far, they are doing them on the west coast and in Texas too. I’m sure there will be more, please refer to www.projectmichelle.com for updates. They even have kits that you can order to see if you are a match if you cannot make it to a drive. That info is on the website too.

Gay Asian Party @ Nowhere

26 08 2007

Hey it’s K.C.’arl. I’m soft/co-hosting a new Gay Asian Party at Nowhere on the last Sunday of the month with Troy (awesome guy, with a vision). The grand opening night is this Sunday the 26th.

New York
322 E. 14th St.
9PM NO COVER

This is something that I’ve been asked to be a part on the fly, and I’m honored,…. I hope that Troy and I can work together to shape it into something exciting and different. The goal is to provide an alternative to the WEB. So, I think it’d be nice for it to be different. I’m not sure how much marketing/PR has been done for it so far, but it’s gotta start somewhere. Troy and I are dedicated to creating something that stands out and matters. We’ve got some plans and ideas in the works, but we want to hear from you, the community. So please speak up and represent. And PLEASE forward this to those you think would be interested.

It’s RAINing Asians

14 05 2007

I saw this story on my favorite entertainment news blog, JustJared.com. Stephen Colbert made a hysterical reply-spoof music video ’cause Rain, a Korean R&B-Pop artist, topped him in Time Magazine’s poll of “100 most Influential People of the Year.” Click Out the MusicVid’s below!

Korean famous singer RAIN, “the way to avoid the sun

Stephen Colbert: Let it RAIN!

K.C. also gave me the 411 on this HOT new Chinese (Cantonese) hip-hop artist named Jin. I dig his “Open Letter 2 Obama” track that you can Click Out on his MySpace fan site, right now. lol

I Love you Mom!!!

Accountability Has Been Demanded

12 05 2007

From Carl:

Fight against racism and sexism!!!!!

OCA National (Organization of Chinese Americans) is an organization “Embracing the hopes and aspirations of Asian Pacific Americans.
Here’s the link to speak out against JV and Elvis:
www.ocanational.org/petition.html

From me:

At first I got a chuckle from hearing this prank call. Then after thinking about what was said and who it was said to. I believe it brings to light the racism and sexism that is considered acceptable towards Asian Americans. In a the aftermath of the Virginia Tech Murders. I can see how some Asians are even more sensitive and getting fed-up with being degraded and the but of jokes. More importantly Asians Americans are still viewed as a group of negative and positive stereo-types instead as people from other heritages and different cultures.

I do not believe that JV & Elvis are racist and homophobic or intended to be hateful. They are comedians just joking around. If anything, they made a mistake. The people who they called at the Chinese restaurant did not know who it was that was calling them and did not know that it was a joke. I think they have every right to be offended for being harassed and degraded. And I bet it’s probably something that happens all the time at Asian American run business.

If you are a blogger, podcaster or do anything where you receive public feedback. You may relate to this. It’s kinda like when an anonymous person leaves a hateful comment directed at you on your site or comment-line… At first I would get offended and pissed off about it and take it personally. Now as time has gone by I’ve learned to not give that much weight towards those kinds of comments. Because it wasn’t about me as much as about that persons own issues and ways of thinking. And those are issues that should be public so that we all can examine why it happens and how we can resolve these conflicts.
